Story of Scouting

As one of the stages in the worldwide spread of the Scout Movement which is started by Lord Baden-Powell, Mr. Jothirathna a teacher of our school, and Mr. Kala Rasika started the 131st  President’s College scout group on 19th  February 2010 with the guidance of the principal Mr. Suedesh Nelumdeniya. The scouts who watched in the Negombo District Rally on 18 September 2010, were awarded membership badges on the 1st of October of the same year after various scout activities.  It was our school’s first Scout badge ceremony. A one-day camp was held at our school during this month. The 8th National Scout Jamboree was held from the 26th to the 30th of December of that year and we participated in it. As the New Year 2011 dawned, the new students who came to the school also joined our Scout Group. As our first field visit, we went to the Aluthpala Ancient Rajamaha Viharaya. We increased the members of our scout group by sharing the knowledge on Scouting activities to new Scouts and we are camped again with unity as well as power. It was a great pleasure for all of us Scouts to be able to have so many great achievements here as well. Our first District Rally was held from September 21 to 25 at Thibirigaskatuwa Maha Vidyalaya. There we achieved many great achievements such as first place of Best Camp Gate, First Place of Best Campground, and First Place of Best Kitchen.

By the dawn of the third year of our school scout group, we had a keen interest in scouting. We celebrated the birthday of Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of scout on 22nd February. A march was held at Galle Face to celebrate the centenary of the commencement of Scouting in Sri Lanka. On the 17th of May this year, we launched our cycling tour of Pilikuttuwa.  Also on the 12th of May, we held a Vesak program at the school. On the 1st  of August, our scout group held a one-day camp. The District Rally Training Camp was held on the 19th of this month and the District Rally was held from the 19th to the 23rd of September at C.W.W.  Kannangara Vidyalaya, Hunumulla. There we had a great victory with First Place of Best Camp Gate First Place of Best Campground,  second Place of Best Dining Table and our Scout Group took second place of the entire camp. Our Scout Group spent this year by serving the community and gaining the favor of the people. The year 2013 also spent in a good manner by the procedures as mentioned above. Most of the work was completed in January. We had the opportunity to participate in RISSGO International Camp which was held from 18th to 22nd February in the Nuwara Eliya District. The District Training Camp was held from the 5th to the 7th of April and we participated in it. On the 9th of August, a one-day camp was organized by our Scout group. This month we went to Nuwara Eliya as the annual tour. Also, a Scout Training Camp was held at our school on the 17th, 18th, and 19th of October. Because of the excellent performance of the year 2013, the new students who saw our scout activities eagerly attracted us to the Scout Group. In 2014 our scout group did all the training that has been done in previous years, such as awarding medals according to the activities of the members, etc. Our Scout Master did not forget to go on an exploratory tour with all the Scouts.

At the beginning of the year 2015, all the activities of the Scout Group were going on as usual. As the Community Care Workshop of the Year, we will offer twenty-eight Buddha statues(අට විසි බුදු පිලිම) to the Walhena Sri Ginendramaya Temple on Esala Poya Day, highlighting unity as well as the power of our scout group. During this time a one-day camp was held and after that, we went on an exploratory tour to Kirigalpottha. With the experience gained from the tour, the learning process for the scout badges was also successfully carried out. Another project of this year was a planting program at the school. As Scouts, we gained our knowledge day by day and warmly welcomed the year 2016 with many new hopes. Because the 9th  National Jamboree held in Jaffna for 7 days in February and it was an unforgettable event in our scout life. The experience as a scout to become a leader is immense. We earned a high amount of money from the job week and we went to the Ampara exploration tour with that money. This time the District Rally was held at Dutugemunu Maha Vidyalaya, Thibirigaskatuwa, Negombo and we successfully participated in it. Also, our scouts enthusiastically participated in the camp called ‘LEAD 2016’ Leadership Training Course organized by Negombo District Scout Association at Lee Dasanayake, Meerigama Camp in December. AS a one-step of  Scout life further, a Vesak program was held on 5th May 2017 at the Hunumulla Mahamevna Monastery while carrying out all the activities carried out so far. We launched a bicycle tour in the Mirigama area for mountaineering with new members of Scout Group.  Ten members of our Scout Association participated in the Elephant Exploration Tournament this year and it was a fun as well as an experience-rich competition. We participated JOTA-JOTI camp and gained a better understanding of radio and Internet communication. Eight of our scouts also participated in the Lion’s Awake(සිංහයන්ගේ පිබිදිම)  Challenge Tournament organized by Rahula College, Matara at Kirinda Reserve. We visited the Sinharaja Kanneliya Forest Reserve from December 13 to 16 as the annual walk and environmental program. In this year also we completed activities as previously then participated in the 3rd  Negombo Purabatett,  District Rally in 2018. There we created a three-story campground. Also, the gadgets of the Lolyonls brothers’ camp were designed so that the earth would not be damaged. The activities were carried out as before and a great success was achieved.

In the year 2019, four members of our Scout group received the District Commissioner’s Award after completing its’ activities. As before, we eared a high income from the job week with winning peoples’ heart. Our Scout group organized a Scout Training Camp only for all Scouts of our school and trained at the Lee Dassanayake Training Center, Mirigama. There was also a bonfire with prison guards and it was a great experience for us. We ended this year with the same good and enthusiasm as in previous years

We entered the year 2020 with many new hopes. The 1st  seaboart camp was held there for the first time. We camped there with great enthusiasm. This time we designed the Eiffel Tower model as the gateway to our campground. With the spread of the coronavirus around the world, we change the methodology of doing activities together and adapting to the online methods.
